Hi Friends,
Past few weeks , or to say the whole of the last month has been very very busy.
I am glad to inform that I got through a very good Film School in UK, National Film and Television School,Beaconsfield , UK.
So a lot was going on to put things in place and I was running like a mad dog. :-D
As I just happen to get myself some little time, I thought I will post a past work that I did few months back. It was a commissioned work, based on a poem written by a sweet 9 year old girl, Aarya.
I really enjoyed illustrating and it happened to come out as per my liking. :-P

Film review:: The Intochables

 

A beautiful film establishing a very sensitive relationship between a caretaker and a quadriplegic rich patient from Director Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano.

Opening sequence:: weed smoking men, Philippe and Driss pace up in their car and is halted by police. They act as if Driss was taking Philippe to the emergency hospital as he is quadriplegic. The police buy it and escort them to the hospital. They laugh at the situation. Fade out.

Setup:: Act 1::  Driss, a black from Paris, around 26 yrs of age,  is just out of jail after 6 month imprisonment for robbing a jewelry store He seeks employment through state welfare association. He goes for an interview for a job of a caretaker for a rich French art critique, Philippe. . He meets his mom (actually in law-aunty who has raised him).

Plot point 1:  He is thrown out of the house by his aunt for his criminal behavior. Driss’s sarcasm wins Philippe’s interest and he gets hired for a month on trial.

Confrontation:: Act 2:: Driss starts taking care of Philippe. He leans more about his job from other attending nurses and house employs. The relationship starts with Driss making fun of every bit of Philippe’s condition. He speaks out right to everyone around. Philippe likes towards Driss increases as and when times of pain due to medication arrives. Driss accompanies Philippe on long walks and strolls across Paris at midnight. Philippe felt freedom in the breath of air and happy after a long time. They often chatted about Philippe’s past and how things changed. Driss got interested in painting and with the help of Philippe, sold a piece for 11000 Euros. Both became friends. Driss got a taste of life that he would have never expected. Driss forced Philippe to make contact with a secret admirer of Philippe’s poems, which was very difficult for Philippe to do being in a state of paralysis and being shameful for such a state.

Plot Point: Driss’s younger Brother comes to meet Driss and take him home. He is informed of his aunt’s forgiveness. On Philippe’s birthday, Driss gives him a day to remember.

Resolution:: Act3:: Driss takes up a job at a courier place and joins his family. Philippe feels lonely and un-connected with the new caretakers. He does into depression and solitude. Philippe’s world turns grey and mundane which becomes unbearable for him. Driss in inform of the situation. Driss arrives and takes control of the situation. Philippe becomes happy again. Finally Philippe take Driss to the same place where he had got injured during doing Para-gliding. They both Para-glide and win over their fear being a team.

The Film takes time to establish the backdrops of two characters coming from very different statues of life. Paris being a cinematic place brings in art and music sides of human life.

Film Review: SAFE

An action pack film from Director Boaz Yakin and actor Jason Statham.

Setup:Act 1: A chinese girl who is excellent and exceptional with numbers is kidnapped and used as a human memory chip for remembering safe combinations for chinese mafia in America. Also, Russian mafia kills the wife of an ex-cage fighter, Luke Wright,  and throws him out on the streets.

Plot Point1: When the russians kidnapped the girl from the Chinese, due to an unseen incident, the chinese girl, Mei, escapes. On the run, She meets Luke . Both has common enemies. So they stick together and save each other.

Confrontation: Act 2:: Luke and Mei are on the run from the triad chasing them: the chineses, the russians and the corrupt cops of NYPD. Mei and Luke exchange information to help each other. During a hotel shooting, the Chinese procure Mei back in custody. Luke comes to know that the Mayor and the Police are working hand in hand to benefit from the massacres between the Chinese and the Russians. Knowing his corrupt friends in the police, he invites them to rob the safe of the Chinese mafia.Together they loot the safe and take the money. All the cops die except the leader.Luke takes him to know more about a disc that has information about every corrupt bureaucrat.

Plot Point 2 :: Luke has the money and the disc  and makes a deal with the bureaucrat to get the girl.

Resolution: Act 3:: One of the Leaders and a combat equivalent of Luke gets the girl from the Chinese. They meet for exchanging the deals. Combat starts as hands on while Mei shoots the bureaucrat. They inform and threaten the Chinese mafia to keep away from them against non disclosure of his secrets.They keep the money and the disc copies all around and start fresh.

The action pact film holds good as a one time watch. The story focuses on superficial level of emotional closeness and deals more on rushing across to reach a conclusion and solution.

Film Review: Insomnia

Practicing film making is one and to study other films is another. Both helps one to understand story structure. So i thought, why not start reviewing and pin pointing story structures in the films i see. So when i went through this exercise, I felt, it made me more observant and made me think more than just enjoying the film.
So here is the structural breakdown i made.


Indeed a beautiful masterpiece by director Christopher Nolan and awestruck performance by Al Pacino.
The script hold good with , to the point structural hierarchy.The whole three act structure is very prominent overall.

Setup:Act 1: 2 detectives fly in to investigate a murder case.Investigation begins. A  new emerging local police officer looks up at the detective as a mentor. They try to hunt down the unknown murderer. Side by side, some Internal Affairs investigation is going on , on one of the detectives , over a robbery homicide case.

Plot point one: Chasing the murderer through fog, creates confusion and results in one cop getting shot and one of the detectives shooting the other detective.

Confrontation : Act 2  :: Guilt creeps into the detective and makes him an insomniac. His screaming bloody dying friend, the naked beaten down dead girl, blood seeping through the air tight plastic cover flip-flops his blurry vision at times and haunts him continuously.  Searching through the materials of the lost bag of the girl, that the police found, he gets certain clues that leads him to trace the dead girls murderer and tries to follow him. The suspect escapes.He receives a phone call from the killer who tells him that he has seen the detective killing his peer. They meet and the suspect tries to pursue him that in a way that shooting his peer was a mistake , so was the kill of the girl. Either party tries to knock down the other , playing their wild cards time to time.The suspect directs the police towards the ex boyfriend who is arrested for the girls murder later.


Plot point two: The detective thrives to stay in his senses , as it has been 6 day of no sleep. The new emerging local police officer traces certain circumstantial evidence that leads her to follow the tracks where the detectives peer had died. She discovers a shell of a bullet.That does not match the 38 mm that was shot at the detective. It leads her to discover that the detective had shot his peer and so does she goes forward to collect letters exchanged between the girl and the murderer , so as to re open and relook at the case. Insomnia and guilt makes the detective crazy.

Resolution: Act 3 :: The detective follows up with the police and finds out about the whereabouts of the amature police officer. He  drives down to the suspects summer house, where the murderer has trapped the police officer. He confronts  the murderer, combats and kills him  and saves the police officer . In due course, he gets shot. The police officer assures him that she wont tell any body about the bullet. The detective plaeds her to go forward and do the right thing. He says: " Let me sleep now."


The film ends.

Location: The location plays a very important character as its shot in alaska where the sun never sets during the cinematic time.It personifies the detective who cannot sleep and becomes an insomniac.

Season of Gift_01

Hello,

Its been a long time that I have been away from the blog.Work had been hectic and loads of projects came up. Its almost the mid of the new year and this is my first post of this year.
